Pier Blocks

PIER BLOCK MANUFACTURER

TFL's pier blocks have become the standard for many of the major heat treating companies in the US today. Heat treating companies have found that our pier blocks can last from two to five times longer in operation than traditional castable piers, pedestals or steel support rails in car bottom furnaces.

TFL's pier blocks are made from a specially-formulated refractory castable that is extremely resistant to damage from thermal shock or cycling. Ordinary pier blocks can deteriorate rapidly due to cracking and crumbling caused by extreme variations in temperature over a short period of time. This cycling is typical in most car-bottom or box type heat treating furnaces. With the use of this thermal-shock resistant refractory, pier blocks are able to withstand this thermal cycling with relatively minimal damage over the lifetime of the block.

TFL can manufacture the blocks in any size or shape you require. Lifting holes are typically incorporated in our shapes to help you position the blocks in your furnace and change settings for various loads. All of our pier blocks are fired in our furnaces to 1250° F prior to shipment. This controlled initial firing enables us to ensure that all the water from the refractory mix is released in a controlled manner, minimizing micro-cracking and maximizing the physical properties of the pier block.

Hex Block Pier Blocks

TFL's new Hex Block is a totally new innovation in pier blocks that allows for even longer life. The unique hexagonal shape adds to the life of the block by effectively tripling the number of surfaces where work can rest. Once the top surface is worn, chipped off or becomes uneven, you simply rotate the HEX BLOCK to the next position, and a new unworn surface would be on the top.

Another important improvement TFL has incorporated into our HEX BLOCK is a recessed surface on the top of the pier. This recess allows for an increased flow of heat under the work, effectively reducing the "chilled" area where the work is in contact with the HEX BLOCK. This is a valuable feature when heating flat plate and large billets. This recessed surface can either be incorporated into the HEX BLOCK, or left off, depending on your particular needs.

The HEX BLOCK can be made to match the height of your current pier blocks, so that transitioning to a complete HEX BLOCK installation can be easily done.
